There is absolutely no reason why Home Run Battle should be as addictive, engrossing, and fun as it is. It's a home run derby game. See the ball, hit the ball. You get ten outs to see how many home runs you can hit. That's it.

So someone please explain to me why I cannot stop playing it.

From Hangman and Free Rice, to the NYT crossword puzzle, I love word games. Being a writer I guess that just comes with the territory. I feel like I'm sharper and at the end of a good word puzzler. I sometimes even play when I sit down at my desk before I start work with the excuse that I'm warming up.

Moxie is one of my go-to games on my iPhone. It lives in a row with Wurdle, Hangman, Free Rice (Cydia for anyone interested) and Word Warp. Moxie is an extremely unique and infinitely challenging game. It can hold your attention for hours on end.

Backgammon. I have been addicted to 'gammon since I was in high school. I'm sure I would be amazed, if not horrified, if I could see a running tally of the hours that led into days that led into weeks that led into months of the time I have spent in my life trying to score bar points and conjure up 6-1's and doubles. 'Gammon buddies and I have developed full vocabularies over the game, and there are certain memorable wins that will stay with me forever, like when I beat the local Rasta champ in a dive bar in the Virgin Islands on a board that had sea-shells and sand dollars for pieces. I almost threw that win in fear of angry reprisal, but was instead rewarded with a kind gesture that sent me reeling for the rest of the night.

Buying a game for 99 cents has become the digital equivalent of whacking a pinata. It's exciting, it's mysterious, and you have high hopes, but you have absolutely no idea what's going to come tumbling down onto your iPhone. Which it's why it's a relief when a game like Face It! comes along, which delivers precisely 99 cents of value for your whack.

Face It!, like most good App Store games, has a delightfully simple premise. You start out with five colored faces that need to be moved to their home ring, using a variety of paths available. As long as there's a path to an open slot, you can move the face by tapping on it. Each of the faces frowns, cries, or sticks their tongue out at you when they're not in their "home" slot, making you feel measurably responsible for their well-being.

Music iQ tests your knowledge of your own iTunes library, or at least what you have on your iPhone. When I first fired up this app I was a little skeptical, I'm an audiophile and I'm very serious about my fairly large and eclectic classical, jazz, punk and classic reggae and ska collection. I know the music on those albums (yes- I still refer to albums) like the back of my hand, as well as  the liner notes and lists of personnel in each band's line-up. I have to admit that I was surprised as soon as I fired Music iQ up and started playing.

Glyder is a very high quality gaming app. It takes full advantage of the accelerometer for it's controls, has beautiful graphics and the game flows fluidly. It has a cool new-age soundtrack that can be easily turned off if you want to rock out to your own tunes while you soar the skies.

In the simplest terms Glyder is an adventure quest type game. The character Eryn is stuck in a dimensional rift world and must fly about the terrain on glider wings picking up crystals in order to unlock a portal to her home. You simply tilt and turn the iPhone to soar, glide, flap and dive. Yet the game is anything but simple. There are six separate lands to explore within the mythical world, each stocked with it's own challenges. There are also 35 "achievements" to complete as the game moves along, assuring that the player never runs out of tasks. The game takes precision and concentration, from controlling speed and altitude to simply keeping the wings flapping and the character aloft. The graphics are mind boggling, the flight characteristics are incredibly realistic, and the terrain layout is complex.

My 7 year old niece was being super hyper at dinner tonight, so I handed her my iPhone and sent her to the living room to entertain herself. On the last screen there were a slew of new games for her to peruse that were waiting to be reviewed. I figured there was enough new stuff for her to stay entertained for about a half hour or so. An hour and a half later she came into the dining room and asked "What does "10% battery life remaining mean, 'cuz that is what it said before the iPhone went dead. I was playing the frog game." How's that for a positive review?

Sticky Licky is old school arcade game stylee. There is a lot going on in a very simple setting. Tilt the iPhone back and forth to aim, and tap the frog to flick the tongue out. You are aiming for a cloud of flies that buzzes around above the frog, with a bee or two mixed in. An occasional mosquito drops down and if it gets past the tongue, it lands on the frog's nose and drains a little life. Avoid eating the bees, except after you have hit a dragonfly and are in super frog mode. There are intermittent special bugs to eat for mega point action. You can save high scores and levels either locally or online.

I grew up in 'skeeter country. The locals in my town referred to our particularly large variety as the "State Bird". I hate them. Wether it is the whine of thousands swarming, or that one lonely little guy flying circles around your room in the night waiting for you to sleep so that he can leave multiple itchy welts all over your face, I just can't stand 'em. That is why I get such great personal satisfaction out of Blood Lust. But just like life, you are definitely going to end up swatting frantically and still losing a slow, fruitless battle to the little bastards.

Flight Control has been a big winner at the app store so far. It has been the most popular app in multiple countries, and has experienced some serious download numbers in the last month. And for good reason.

Flight Control is a very sticky game. It is simple to figure out from the get go and hard to put down once you start playing. The retro graphics are beautiful and simple and the animation is top notch. Like all the best iPhone games the one controller is your finger. The sound can be easily turned on or off.

The quality of this game is evident from the moment you fire it up. It literally sucks you in and down the tube. I love a game that offers awesome graphics, varied play, takes serious skill to master and keeps me coming back for more and more. Any game that has a warning on it's title page that says it may cause epileptic seizures is sure to be a blast, and Swirl totally delivers.
