Back in the day I used to admire the hardcore Red Sox fans who sat in the bleachers armed with an AM radio, a stubby pencil and a box-score card. Those guys missed nothing. Before the Jumbotron, the transistor was the instant replay and the score card was the stat log. I felt oh-so-tech-guilty sitting in Section 1 last week at Fenway with my iPhone rocking the new MLB.com At Bat 2009. But it was oh-so-sweet.
The first notable feature of the app is the audio. MLB brass has finally loosened up it's broadcasting licenses and is allowing live radio coverage to be streamed out on the mobile airwaves. This means EVERY game can be listened to and (wow) you can even choose which team's radio announcers you want to hear from. I can now take Joe Castiglione's nasal play by play with me anywhere in the world, my life is complete. And when you want to check in on another game concurrent with your team's? You have that radio too. Another broadcast boon, key plays are downloadable as video clips. This is really one step away from someday watching the game on your phone.
