Screenplay formatting software is not a new scam. Many wannabe screenwriters have forked over two-hundred plus dollars for what is essentially a stripped-down word processor with fancy formatting. I know this because I am one of them.

So when I got tweeted a link to a screenplay application for the iPhone, my rational mind was mugged by my irrational mind, and before I knew it, it had dropped onto my iPhone. In my mind, I was already writing scenes on the fly, at the beach, at lunch, without the hideous burden of carrying a laptop.

Star Fusion

Star Fusion 1Developer: Christopher Waite
Category: Games
Version: 1.0
Release Date: July 26, 2009
Size: 3.0 MB
Price $0.99
Rating 8/10

Birdhouse

Star Fusion is one of those games that are just indie-developed-looking to the core. The developer, Christopher Waite, put the entire game together as a one man show; the graphics, the sounds and the accompanying music. It's simple, clean and straightforward.

Star fusion is a quick one to pick up and figure out, but a hard one to master. The stars are created randomly so no two games are the same in order or pace. One game can be extremely slow and rhythmic, the next fast and furious. The games last two minutes each, so there is a standardization in that aspect and scores are definitely comparable to each other.

Dial 9 - A Smart Visual Dialer

Size: 1.6 MB
Price: $0.99
Rating 5/10

Those of you feeling bored with or limited by the iPhone's "Favorites" list will appreciate Dial 9, a graphical replacement for calling, texting, or emailing your most frequently used contacts. Dial 9 puts a photo of your contacts on a colorful screen, so calling them is as simple as tapping their photo.

When you tap the photo of your contact, a menu pops up, giving you the option to call, send an SMS or an email, view their contact information, change their photo, or show a map of their address. You can have up to nine contacts per page (hence the name of the app), and up to ten pages, for a potential total of 90 contacts. You can change the background of the application screen by page, from electric blue to corinthian leather, so that you can differentiate your drinking buddies from your church choir, for example.

There is absolutely no reason why Home Run Battle should be as addictive, engrossing, and fun as it is. It's a home run derby game. See the ball, hit the ball. You get ten outs to see how many home runs you can hit. That's it.

So someone please explain to me why I cannot stop playing it.

From Hangman and Free Rice, to the NYT crossword puzzle, I love word games. Being a writer I guess that just comes with the territory. I feel like I'm sharper and at the end of a good word puzzler. I sometimes even play when I sit down at my desk before I start work with the excuse that I'm warming up.

Moxie is one of my go-to games on my iPhone. It lives in a row with Wurdle, Hangman, Free Rice (Cydia for anyone interested) and Word Warp. Moxie is an extremely unique and infinitely challenging game. It can hold your attention for hours on end.

The interface is simple. You find your pulse on your body with one hand, and tap the rhythm of your pulse on your iPhone with the other. After about ten taps, the program extrapolates your heart rate, so you know where you stand. The idea is to know your resting heart rate so that when you go exercise, you can take your pulse again and know approximately how many calories you're burning.

Backgammon. I have been addicted to 'gammon since I was in high school. I'm sure I would be amazed, if not horrified, if I could see a running tally of the hours that led into days that led into weeks that led into months of the time I have spent in my life trying to score bar points and conjure up 6-1's and doubles. 'Gammon buddies and I have developed full vocabularies over the game, and there are certain memorable wins that will stay with me forever, like when I beat the local Rasta champ in a dive bar in the Virgin Islands on a board that had sea-shells and sand dollars for pieces. I almost threw that win in fear of angry reprisal, but was instead rewarded with a kind gesture that sent me reeling for the rest of the night.

Face It!

Face !t!Developer: Reditus Solutions LLC
Category: Games
Version: 1.0
Release Date: May 24, 2009
Size: 0.6 MB
Price: $0.99
Rating 8/10

Buying a game for 99 cents has become the digital equivalent of whacking a pinata. It's exciting, it's mysterious, and you have high hopes, but you have absolutely no idea what's going to come tumbling down onto your iPhone. Which it's why it's a relief when a game like Face It! comes along, which delivers precisely 99 cents of value for your whack.

Face It!, like most good App Store games, has a delightfully simple premise. You start out with five colored faces that need to be moved to their home ring, using a variety of paths available. As long as there's a path to an open slot, you can move the face by tapping on it. Each of the faces frowns, cries, or sticks their tongue out at you when they're not in their "home" slot, making you feel measurably responsible for their well-being.

I wanted to write this review last week, but I kept putting it off. Then I would forget to do it, then put it off some more and then, whoa, like serious time had gone by without me even realizing it.

Wait.

What was I doing again?

Oh yeah, reviewing iPot! I remember now.

Wow, "big round of applause for California laws" as Fat Mike says. If you are one of those who don't know, (or can't remember) California has de-criminalized marijuana for medicinal purposes with the passing of Proposition 215. I won't ramble on about the details, but through a series of steps one can obtain an ID card, and then purchase marijuana legally to aid in the easing of a seemingly endless number of afflictions. These afflictions include pain, stress, anxiety, hair loss, toenail fungus, bad breath, insomnia, social awkwardness, un-mellowness and not feeling high unless you have smoked some really good pot. And some other things too, but I can't remember them.

Music iQ tests your knowledge of your own iTunes library, or at least what you have on your iPhone. When I first fired up this app I was a little skeptical, I'm an audiophile and I'm very serious about my fairly large and eclectic classical, jazz, punk and classic reggae and ska collection. I know the music on those albums (yes- I still refer to albums) like the back of my hand, as well as  the liner notes and lists of personnel in each band's line-up. I have to admit that I was surprised as soon as I fired Music iQ up and started playing.
