It seems like there's been a little bit of a decrease in the numbers of accelerometer dependent games released recently. I was a huge fan of the use of the accelerometer and any games that depended upon it as their main source of movement, there are some obvious classics. My favorite games recently have been all finger swipe and tap dependent. I was beginning to think that the accelerometer games were becoming uncool or played out to developers. Fish Food Frenzy just popped onto my phone and I'm psyched to be tilting and turning desperately again.

The iPod Touch has been lurking in the background for a while now. As people have been micro-focusing on iPhone app stats, iPod Touch users have secretly become the big spenders in the App Store, especially on games and child related educational apps. My daughter for one, actually fires up the Touch and hits math flash cards - for fun! Kid Book is the first app to offer something with some educational value to the really little ones. This is a great one for iPod Touch owners, or for iPhone-using parents on the go.

I'm a baseball fanatic. I live in a city that's wild for it's baseball team. I played little league baseball (poorly) from t-ball to the majors, I have a head way too full of stats, I go to minor league games when our guys are rehabbing, I watch every game at exactly 7:05 pm, I talk baseball to anyone who will listen and I waste at least a few thousand dollars every summer to see my beloved Red Sox play at Fenway Park.

Obviously I've been through a few iPhone baseball games. 9 Innings: Pro Baseball 2009 from Com2Us is a very cool full-on baseball app. It offers all of the standard features you'd want to see in a complete team vs. team game, plus some surprisingly creative original ones too.

It is very frustrating when your iPhone starts running slowly or crashes, and it usually happens when you're doing something important which uses a lot of memory. This is especially true for owners of 2G and 3G models. Recently the app Free Memory was pulled from the App Store, the decision was completely made by Apple and had nothing to do with the developer, iStat. There's a jailbreak app that frees up some memory, but if you are not using a jailbroken phone you are out of luck, and stuck with re-starts and re-springs to speed up your phone, which takes a while. There is a great app available to speed your phone up in a jiffy.

Today is the day of grown-ups app reviews, and Deep Green fits well in the category. Leave it to chess geeks to create great chess apps, with as many bells and whistles available as there are moves and strategies in the game itself. Deep Green offers the perfect balance of good clean chess playability and necessary features as well as the addition of some really cool geeky stuff.

There is something positive about the iPhone that is becoming more and more apparent: this is a gaming platform that caters to adults and grown up tastes. I don't know many adults who own their own DS, Paystation or Wii. However, $300.00 cell phones definitely inhabit the realm of the grown up toy, and because of that the games available go way beyond slash and hack, blast and bleed, and Bratz makeovers. iHitori is a giant step away from immature.

It's now mid-August and Hurricane season is well under way. This week also marks the 4th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the destruction of the Lower 9th Ward in N.O.LAS. Two storms have blown through the Caribbean already, Ana and Bill, a third, Claudette, spun a path all the way up to Nova Scotia producing heavy rains and big surf up and down the East Coast, and now the North East is drying out after the remains of Tropical Storm Danny.

It's big news when the storm season hits the South and the East Coast, and suddenly all eyes are on the West Coast of Africa, where tropical storms spin one after another out into the Atlantic, ambling towards the Caribbean with steadily intensifying power. The intensity and destruction of even a near miss is impressive. That's why people on the East Coast pay such close attention to the storms and their development. The first two hurricane seasons that the iPhone was in existence we had The Weather Channel app and the generic Weather app to keep us posted. Now, on round three, a few hurricane specific apps have popped up, the best being Hurricane.

With the seemingly unlimited game options on the iPhone platform, it's getting harder and harder for games to maintain my interest. Gone are the days where Enigmo ruled the roost (although that's still a good one, IMHO); now games come so fast and furious that you really have to distinguish yourself with sound, design, elegance, and replayability. Personally, I download so many games that it's easy to tell which ones are capturing my attention: I keep tapping their icons.

After a year of the untamed wild west App Store, we're entering the phase where long-term Macintosh developers are finally starting to enter the iPhone game in force. This is a great development, with some caveats. The iPhone is not the Macintosh, and iTablet rumors aside, it's not likely to be anytime soon. But when a Mac developer who "gets it" starts developing for the iPhone, you should pay strict attention.
