Recorder is another extremely high quality app from the developers The Retronyms. Recorder is the best audio recording app available in the iTunes store, hands down. It offers the ability to create extremely high quality audio files of voice memos, live music, and even phone calls. It is the only app in the App Store  that can record phone calls placed from your iPhone.

The interface of Recorder is elegant and simple yet offers a number of significant bells and whistles that set it apart from any other sound file recording app available.

Sound files are created using the first menu bar selection, Recordings. A large record button makes it easy to start and pause recordings. Recordings can be made from seconds to hours in length. There is an option to choose low or high quality recordings. There is a cool little sound wave graph above the record button that displays the time length of the recording. The app has been designed to work seamlessly with an external mic, and when I tested out my high quality studio mic from MacMice the sound quality blew me away.

Files are saved as memos which can be edited to give them custom names. Short files can easily be emailed. The files can also be edited/trimmed right in the app with a simple slider, a very handy feature. Smaller files can be easily emailed. The app also has a WIFI synch feature that is really handy and easy  to use.

While the external sound file recording features of Recorder make it the best recording app available, it's the app's ability to record incoming/outgoing calls that widens the gulf between Recorder and other sound file recording apps. The Retronyms worked extremely hard directly with the phone company to offer this feature. There is a nominal fee to record your calls. All recorded phone calls can be WIFI synched, trimmed and emailed.

This app blows away Apple's recording app, and any other sound recording app available. I was waiting a long time for someone to offer a professional style recording app in the App Store, and The Retronyms have pulled it off. Recorder is categorized as a Business app, but it could live easily in, Utilities, or Productivity. Don't let the $0.99 price point fool you, this app could easily be a $5.00 app, it's one of the best deals you will find in the App Store
