It is very frustrating when your iPhone starts running slowly or crashes, and it usually happens when you're doing something important which uses a lot of memory. This is especially true for owners of 2G and 3G models. Recently the app Free Memory was pulled from the App Store, the decision was completely made by Apple and had nothing to do with the developer, iStat. There's a jailbreak app that frees up some memory, but if you are not using a jailbroken phone you are out of luck, and stuck with re-starts and re-springs to speed up your phone, which takes a while. There is a great app available to speed your phone up in a jiffy.

A fairly new app, Memory Sweep has stepped into the void left by the exit of Free Memory. Fire it up and check the status of your iPhones memory. It will tell you the Free, Inactive, Active and Wired Memory use. It will show you which processes are running simultaneously on the phone and using memory, which is a lot. Select one of two options, "Free memory moderately- 15 MB" or "Free maximum memory- 30 MB" and the app grinds away for a few seconds, and immediately frees up a significant amount of memory. You will notice your phone speeds up immediately.

This app is one that every iPhone user should have installed with their other Utility apps, in fact Apple should probably include an option like this under Settings. If you are frustrated that your phone is crawling through basic processes, install Memory Sweep, run it and say "Wow". Memory Sweep is a free app, so it's definitely a no-brainer. Something free that improves the user experience of your iPhone? Priceless.
