I'm going to come right out and say that World Newspapers is a must have for any iPhone owner out there who considers themselves a news junkie. Having the NYT, WSJ, AP Mobile and BBC Reader gives you a thorough look at all of the major news topics globally, but what if you want in depth local news? There are a few apps that will select random articles near you by using the GPS feature or honing in on your zip code, but if you want to read the whole publication you have to find it through Safari- if it's even available, and you aren't going to find any foreign news.
World Newspapers takes local news as far as it can go. It lists global regions, countries, states and cities that have content online. Pretty amazing. While it is a great feature to be able to read your home town newspaper while you are traveling, where World Newspapers shines is in allowing you to take world news to a macro level. You can start with a Reuters article, move on to a BBC article to get a rounded opinion, and then move into the local coverage of the event- worldwide.
When I started using this app I was immediately impressed at how easy the layout was. Simply hone in on what you want by selecting one of five global regions, then select a country, then select a town or city. Each town or city has a list of all of the publications that post online content. Want to see what's happening on St. Kitts? Check out The Labour Spokesman. Apparently there is a guy down there they are calling "St. Kitt's Own Sadam". Not good. Do you want to know what the local opinion is in Kabul? Check out Pajhwok Daily News. Faroe Islands? The Dimmalaetting. Comoros? Try the Al-Watwan.
In order to be truly educated about what is happening in the world in this day and age, you have to do more than read the NYT with your coffee in the morning. This ain't your daddy's world son. As an information and reference source concerning current events this app is unbeatable by any that I've found. If your news screen holds the Big 5, take it to the next level with World Newspapers. It's a $1.99 app, and totally worth every cent, especially since your major news apps were free.
