Here in Boston there are basically three topics that you can use to strike up a conversation with anyone. They're which ever team is currently playing (Red Sox, Pats, Celtics, Bruins), the weather (if you don't like it just wait a minute and it will change), and the king of 'em all- directions around the city. Everyone has an opinion on how to get there from here, here from there, and anywhere in between. In a city whose streets are built on top of cow-paths established in the 1700's, there are numerous ways to get anywhere, some easy, some complex, some better in the morning, some better on the weekend, some better in inclement weather, some with the most Dunkin' Donuts or Carvel's en route...... you get the point. Fresh Tracks is an app that addresses the issue of getting places the best way, and of explaining how to do it.
Fresh Tracks uses GPS to record your route, or Path, as you travel via foot, bike, car, boat, whatever. It will record your movements on road or off road. The app automatically recognizes your location and begins to record the path of your movements in Latitude and Longitude. It breaks the movements down into Segments and you can label each Segment individually. At any point you can touch View Map at the bottom of the screen to see the map layout of your path. Each Path that you travel is stored and named individually.
When you want to access your recorded Paths, select one from the list and then choose from several view options. This is a Google maps feature, the views are Normal, Satellite, Hybrid, and Terrain. You can save these settings. Whenever you are using a map of one of your Paths, you can select Where Am I to see where you are along the route.
The sharing options for this app are well designed and easy to use. This app is really completed by offering the ability to share your personal Paths with others besides showing them physically on your iPhone. You can send an email that has the map URL embedded in it to a non user, or select "Mail To Fresh Tracks User". This option is really cool, when the person opens that email on their iPhone it will open and save the path in their Fresh Tracks app for future use or sharing
The next time a lost friend calls you en-route to your house and offers up vague descriptions of what is around them and you flail trying to steer them through unmarked one way catacombs, simply fire up Fresh Tracks, send them the map of the Path to your location, say "See Ya" and hang up. They'll get there, guaranteed. This one is a no brainer purchase to keep next to your maps app.
